You don’t need to “dress up” for a correctional officer job interview. A polo shirt paired with khaki pants is more than enough. That said, you can’t go wrong with a black tie, white button-up, and black dress pants. The color neutrality looks more uniform and serious, which is perfect for the role.
What to expect from a correctional officer job interview
According to my friend who’s a correctional officer in Virginia, the interview will likely be a mix of questions related to education, past job experiences, Corrections orientation, and situational judgment.
You should also expect situational questions where your answers might be challenged.
Stick to your first answer. Don't backpedal when challenged, even if your answer isn't “correct”. They are testing to see if you're confident in your decision-making and not a pushover.
For the Corrections-oriented questions, always remember that custody and security are priorities. Three rules to remember:
- We never enter a hostile situation alone, we always call for support.
- We keep secure areas secure, and we account for every living being in our area.
- We always remain professional and we always follow policy.
If you use these three rules to guide you through these questions, you will be just fine.
You should also be genuine and avoid generic responses like "I want to serve my community."
Provide a deeper, more personal reason. Everyone says they want to serve the community; you need to stand out.
